Loving Kindness Sutra
5th Century BC
This is the way of someone who truly understands kindness and lives peace.
Be true. Be sincere. Speak simply.
Be gentle in how you move through the world. Be satisfied with enough. Keep your life uncluttered.
Be calm. Be steady. Be quietly wise.
Live with humility. Do not demand attention. Do not behave in ways that would trouble a clear-seeing person. Then, sit down and let your heart open. Wish that everyone be okay. Wish that everyone be safe. Not just the people you like.
Every living thing; the strong, the weak, the small, the large, the seen, the unseen, the near, the far, alive now or not yet born.
Do not deceive anyone. Do not look down on anyone. Do not let anger turn to harm.
If you want to understand it, imagine how a mother feels as she protects her only child. Without thinking, without hesitation.
Now take that same loving care and let it widen. Not just to one person but to everyone. Radiate this outwards in all directions, with no boundaries. Whether you are walking, standing, sitting, lying down; as long as you are awake keep this warmth alive. This is the natural way of the open heart.
Without clinging to opinions, without holding on To your preferences, but seeing clearly. And as craving falls away, little by little, freedom appears.
There is nothing mystical here.
Live cleanly. Harm no one. Let the heart widen. That widening is liberation beginning.
